Szymon Piotr Kołecki (born October 12, 1981 in Oława ) is a Polish weightlifter .

Personal

Kołecki is the son of Leszek Kołecki , who was also a weightlifter and currently (as of February 2011) works as a trainer. Szymon Kołecki is married and has two children. He also runs two fitness studios in Pułtusk and Ciechanów .

Athletic career

Kołecki was already attracting international attention at the age of 14 when he took second place at the European Youth Championships in Burgas in the class up to 83 kg. With a body weight of 77.80 kg, he achieved 275.0 kg (122.5 / 152.5 kg) and thus placed behind Vladimir Smorchkov , who lifted 292.5 kg.

In the next few years Kołecki was represented at every World Cup and European Championship for seniors and also started at various junior events. So he was able to win the Junior European Championship in 1998 in the middleweight category up to 94 kg with 382.5 kg (165.0 / 217.5 kg). In his first start among the seniors he finished fifth at the World Championships in Lahti with a duel result of 385.0 kg (167.5 / 218.0 kg). His performance in pushing earned him the bronze medal.

In 1999 Kołecki took part in both the European Junior Championships and World Championships, as well as the World and European Senior Championships. With the exception of the Senior World Championships in Athens , where he had to bow to Akakios Kachiasvilis , he emerged victorious from all these events and tried to set new world records in some of his last push attempts.

A year later he repeated this performance and was able to place on the podium in all four title fights. The European Championships in Sofia in the Olympic year made it clear that Kołecki was one of the title favorites for the Olympic Games. At the age of 18 he tore 180.0 kg and hit a new world record with 232.5 kg in the middleweight division. Thus he also set the Kachiasvilis duel record with 412.5 kg. At the Junior World Championships in Prague , which he was able to win with 395.0 kg, he failed to improve his world record to 233.0 kg.

At the Olympic Games in Sydney Kołecki was able to assert himself in a very strong field, but had to admit defeat to Kachiasvilis again when he crouched down badly in the second attempt with 227.5 kg, injured himself and had to end the competition early. Kachiasvilis won with 405.0 kg, ahead of Kołecki, who also lifted 405.0 kg (182.5 / 222.5 kg) but was heavier, and ahead of Alexei Petrow , who scored 402.5 kg.

In the following years Kołecki only appeared occasionally in competitions because injuries to his knee and back hampered him.

At the 2001 European Championships in Trenčín Kołecki competed with overweight in the heavyweight category up to 105 kg. Here he was able to set his best duel and took second place with 412.5 kg (180.0 / 232.5 kg) behind Yevgeny Tschigischew , who scored 422.5 kg. The World Championships in Antalya Kołecki completed again in the usual middle heavyweight division. After the tear he was in 9th place with 172.5 kg, but was able to secure a podium place with 230.0 kg in the push. In the last shock attempt he failed at 237.5 kg, which would have meant gold, and with 402.5 kg was third behind Kouroush Bagheri and Nizami Paşayev , who lifted 407.5 kg and 405.0 kg respectively.

Kołecki only competed in his next competition in 2003. At the European Championships in Loutraki , he again competed in the heavyweight division up to 105 kg, which he made full use of this time. With 410.0 kg (180.0 / 230.0 kg) in a duel, he took fourth place. However, his performance in pushing was enough for the bronze medal. The winner of the competition was Ihor Rasorjonow with 425.0 kg, ahead of Alan Zagaew with 420.0 kg.

During the preparation for the Olympic Games in 2004 Kołecki tested positive for nandrolone and received a ban, which is why he could not compete again until 2006. He won the European Championships in his own country with 394.0 kg (175.0 / 219.0 kg) ahead of Andrei Demanow with 393.0 kg and Nikolaos Kourtidis , who lifted 387.0 kg, but Kołecki had to go to the World Championships in Santo Domingo bow to Kazak Ilya Ilyin , who recently switched to middle heavyweight. Here Iljin, Kołecki and Roman Konstantinow all lifted 392.0 kg, which is why the duel medals were awarded purely based on body weight.

In preparation for the 2008 Olympic Games, Kołecki competed in the 2007 European and World Championships, which he called with 395.0 kg (177.0 / 218.0 kg) and 392.0 kg (173.0 / 219.0 kg) First or third finished. In the Olympic year 2008 he won the European Championships in Italy with 397.0 kg (177.0 / 220.0 kg) and 12.0 kg ahead of Demanow, who lifted 385.0 kg. At the Olympic Games in Beijing Kołecki was able to increase again to 403.0 kg, which meant silver behind the doped and disqualified Ilyin with 406.0 kg and before the also doped and disqualified Khadzhimurat Akkajew with 402.0 kg. On the competition stage, Kolecki appeared bald to draw attention to China's human rights violations. Since then, Kołecki has not played any more international competitions (as of February 2011).
