Alan Zagaew ( Bulgarian Алан Цагаев , Russian Алан Цагаев / Alan Zagajew ; born September 13, 1977 in Ordzhonikidze , Russia ) is a former Bulgarian weightlifter and world record holder in pushing with 237 kg in the class up to 105 kg.
Career
Alan Zagaew, who was born in Russia , emigrated to Bulgaria in 1998. It first appeared on the international scene at the 2004 European Championships, where it scored 392.5 kg in the 94 kg class.
Just 5 months later, Zagaew competed in the class up to 105 kg at the Olympic Games in Sydney and increased his duel result by 30 kg to 422.5 kg, with which he won the silver medal. It was previously unclear whether Zagaew would even start due to the Bulgarian doping scandal. After three Bulgarian medalists tested positive for diuretics , the IMF banned the entire team first. The Bulgarian federation sued the sports court against the judgment and won, which is why Zagaew was able to start.
At the 2001 World Championships, however, his result of 405 kg was only enough for eighth place. A year later, Zagaew improved his performance again and became vice world champion in duels and world champion in pushing.
In Vancouver 2004 three invalid attempts in the snatch prevented a duel placement and Zagaew could only win the gold medal in the jerk.
In 2004, just before the Athens Olympics, Zagaew tested positive and banned for two years.
When his suspension expired in 2006, he lifted 385.0 kg in a duel at the World Championships and finished 10th. But at the 2007 World Cup in Chiang Mai, he increased again to 411.0 kg and became vice world champion for the second time.
In 2008, in the run-up to the Olympic Games, Zagaew tested positive again with ten other Bulgarian lifters and received a lifelong ban as a repeat offender.
