At the XXVI. At the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta , ten weightlifting competitions were held. The venue was Hall E in the Georgia World Congress Center . The weight classes have been adjusted by 1 to 4 kg; these were the first changes to the Olympic weight classes since their introduction in 1920.

Marc Huster set a world record with 213.5 kg in jerking, but this was not included in the official rating, as the Olympic regulations only allowed increases of 2.5 kg for the duel. However, the 213.5 kg was recognized as an official world record.
