Raimonds Bergmanis (born July 25, 1966 in Pļaviņas ) is a Latvian weightlifter and politician of the Latvijas Zaļā partija . From July 7, 2015 to January 23, 2019 he was Minister of Defense of the Republic of Latvia.

Life

Bergmanis studied at the Riga Technical University and worked for the Defense Forces of Latvia . After the end of his professional sports career as a weightlifter, Bergmanis worked as a television presenter for Latvian television stations.

Sports

As a weightlifter , Bergmanis was successful in various athletic competitions. He finished third in the World Strongman Challenge in 2003. At the World Muscle Power Championships he was first in 1997, second in 1998 and second in 1999. At the World's Strongest Man sports competition , he finished seventh in 1996, fifth in 1997, third in 2002, fifth in 2003 and fourth in 2004. At the Arnold Strongman Classic he finished fifth in 2002, third in 2003, third in 2004 and eighth in 2006. Bermanis participated as a weightlifter in the Summer Olympics in 1992, 1996 and 2000. In March 2013 he was elected Vice President of the Latvian Olympic Committee.

In the Straujuma II cabinet , he was the successor to Raimonds Vējonis from July 7, 2015, Minister of Defense . During the government reshuffle in February 2016, he kept this post in Kučinski's cabinet .

After he was able to win a mandate in the parliamentary elections in Latvia in 2018 , but his party was no longer involved in the government, he stayed as a member of parliament.
