history

Traces of settlement from the 3rd millennium BC were found on two castle mounds. The remains of the medieval Loxten Castle (Lokstenes pilsdrupas) are located in a spur position above the high bank of the Daugava and overlook the neighboring Selburg Castle above the village of Sēlpils . During the Polish-Swedish War , the Swedes captured Selburg Castle in 1626 and set up a war camp there.

The place developed around the Stockmannshof estate and a railway station on the Riga - Dünaburg line . In 1902 there was a glass factory and a stone smelter, both of which were destroyed in the First World War.

In 1927 Pļaviņas received city rights . In 1956 the neighboring Gostiņi was incorporated.

Pļaviņu novads

In 2009 the city merged with three surrounding municipalities to form an administrative district (Pļaviņu novads). (See also: Administrative division of Latvia )
