Inese Jaunzeme

Inese Jaunzeme (born May 21, 1932 in Pļaviņas , Latvia ; † February 13, 2011 in Riga ) was a Soviet athlete of Latvian origin. With a height of 1.69 m, her competition weight was 70 kg.

She trained at Dinamo Riga . Third in the 1956 Soviet Javelin Throwing Championships , Inese Jaunzeme was just able to qualify for the Olympic Games with 50.84 m . In Melbourne she was sixth of the qualification with 46.19 m. In the final she threw three Olympic records and was Olympic champion with 53.86 m ahead of Chilean Marlene Ahrens (with 50.38 m). She received the Order of the Red Banner of Labor of the Soviet Union in 1957 .

She had her personal best of 55.73 m in 1960.

After completing her sports career, Inese Jaunzeme studied medicine . She then worked as a traumatologist and plastic surgeon and taught at the Traumatological Institute of Stradiņš University in Riga .

In 1999 she became president of the Latvian Olympic Association (Latvijas olimpiešu kluba) .
