María Caridad Colón

María Caridad Colón ( María Caridad Colón Rueñes-Salazar ; born March 25, 1958 in Baracoa ) is a former Cuban javelin thrower and Olympic champion .

At the 1980 Olympic Games , Ute Richter from the GDR threw an Olympic record in qualifying with 66.66 m. María Colón was eighth in qualification with 62.42 m. In the final, Colón improved the Olympic record in the first attempt with 68.40 m and won Olympic gold as the first Cuban woman ahead of Saida Gunba from the Soviet Union and the two throwers from the GDR, Ute Hommola and Ute Richter.

In 1983, as in 1979, she won the Pan American Championships. At the World Athletics Championships in 1983 , she was eighth with 62.04 m.

She threw her best performance of 70.14 m on June 15, 1986 in Havana .

María Caridad Colón is 1.69 m tall and weighed 66 kg during her playing days.
