Athletic career

Lara's first international appearance was at the World Championships in 1987 in Ostrava , where he finished fourth with 337.5 kg in the middleweight category up to 75 kg. At the 1989 World Cup he was able to improve his duel performance to 357.5 kg, which meant a bronze medal in the tear, as well as the silver medal in a duel. In 1991 at the world championships in Donaueschingen he won his first world championship with 355.0 kg.

At the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona Lara was able to confirm his performance and finished second behind Fedor Kasapu with 357.5 kg . Since both lifted the same loads, only Lara's 250 g higher body weight decided the placement.

When the classes were restructured in 1993, Lara stayed in the middleweight division , now up to 76 kg. At the 1994 World Cup he won gold again in the new class with 365.0 kg in a duel, ahead of Ingo Steinhöfel with 362.5 kg. The World Championships a year later ended Lara also with gold. In tearing, pushing and in a duel, he took first place and relegated the Bulgarian Joto Jotow to second place in a duel. In the last attempt to push, he failed due to the world record load of 208.0 kg.

At his second Olympic Games in Atlanta in 1996 , Lara won Olympic gold with 367.5 kg, again ahead of Jotow.

In 1997 at his last World Championships in Chiang Mai , Lara could not bring in a valid attempt in pushing after he landed in 6th place in the snap with 160 kg.
