Fyodor Fyodorovich Bogdanovsky

Fyodor Fjodorowitsch Bogdanowski ( Russian Фёдор Фёдорович Богдановский ; born April 16, 1930 in Schetejewo, Tver Oblast ; † October 2, 2014 in Saint Petersburg ) was a Soviet weightlifter .

Career

Fyodor Bogdanowski started lifting weights at the age of 18. At first he started at regional featherweight championships, but soon grew into the lightweight. As a 19-year-old lightweight, he managed 275 kg in the Olympic three-way battle (OD) in 1949. At that time he was working as a chauffeur in a glassworks. In 1950 he was drafted into the military and transferred to Moscow . There he came into the hands of the trainer Nikolai Krylov, who quickly brought him to the front. In 1952 he started at the championships of the Soviet Army in Odessa and won there with 365 kg in the middleweight division. In 1954 he made his first trip abroad with the Soviet national team to Lebanon and Egypt . In Cairo he achieved 395 kg in the OD and was one of the world's top middleweight athletes.

From 1954 he was the Soviet starter at the Olympic Games and World Championships in this weight class for many years. The Americans Peter George and Thomas Kono were his toughest opponents during this time. His greatest sporting success was the Olympic gold medal in Melbourne in 1956 , when he finally managed to beat Peter George. From 1959 he became a rival in his own country with Alexander Kurynow , who ousted him from the national team in 1960. After finishing his career as an active weightlifter, Fyodor Bogdanowski devoted himself to the training of Leningrad . One of his master students was Pavel Pervuschin .

  • 1958, 2nd place , World Championships in Stockholm , Wed, with 422.5 kg, behind Kono, 430 kg and in front of Marcel Paterni , France, 395 kg;
  • 1959, 1st place , Championship of the Eastern Armies in Leipzig , Wed, with 425 kg, ahead of Bochenek, 382.5 kg;
  • 1959, 2nd place , World Cup in Warsaw , Wed, with 417.5 kg, behind Kono, 425 kg and in front of Bochenek, 392.5 kg.
