Jordan Mitkow ( Bulgarian Йордан Митков , English transcription Yordan Mitkov; born April 3, 1956 in Asenovgrad , Bulgaria ) is a former Bulgarian weightlifter . He became an Olympic middleweight champion in 1976 .

Career

Jordan Mitkow was discovered at the beginning of the 1970s as part of an intensive talent search and development program of the Bulgarian Weightlifting Association, which had been initiated by the new head coach Ivan Abajiev , who had been in office since 1969 . He comes from Asenowgrad and started for the local sports club Assenowez.

At the beginning of 1973, Jordan Mitkow stayed with a Bulgarian junior selection for an international match against the Polish juniors in Warsaw , where he reached 202.5 kg (85–117.5) as a featherweight in a duel, with Jarczynski from Poland, the 217, Reached 5 kg, lost. Just a few months later, he achieved a lightweight 270 kg (122.5-147.5) at a junior tournament in Pyongyang / North Korea , finishing second behind singer from the GDR , 272.5 kg. A result by Jordan Mitkow is known from 1974. He finished 2nd in a junior middleweight tournament in Koszalin with a weight of 267.5 kg.

In 1975 he increased at the Danube Cup tournament of the juniors in Dimitrovgrad in the middle weight to 302.5 kg (132.5-170) and thus won before the Austrian hype, 265 kg. He was able to increase continuously in the next few months and took second place at the Junior World Championships in 1975 in Marseille in the middleweight division with 320 kg (142.5-177.5) behind Jurik Wardanjan from the USSR, 325 kg. Since the 1972 Olympic middleweight champion Jordan Bikow was no longer available, Jordan Mitkow was used by the Bulgarian Weightlifting Association in 1975 at the age of 19 at the World and European Championships in Moscow that year . He reached there in the middleweight 332.5 kg (150-182.5) and was with this performance behind Peter Wenzel from the GDR, 335 kg and his compatriot Nedeltscho Kolew , who reached 325 kg, both vice world and vice European champion.

At the Bulgarian Championship in Sofia in 1976 Jordan Mitkow set a new world record in a duel with 345 kg (155-190) in the middleweight division. At the European Championships in 1976 in Berlin (East), however, he only weighed 330 kg (147.5–182.5) in the middleweight division, placing third behind Wartan Militosjan , who achieved 340 kg and Peter Wenzel, who weighed 335 kg . Space. It then caused a big surprise at the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal . Miltosjan, Wenceslaus and he agreed on the medals there too. But while Miltosjan and Wenzel did not achieve their achievements from the European championship in 1976, Jordan Mitkow increased in a duel to 335 kg (145-190) and surprisingly won the gold medal in the middleweight division in front of Wartan Militosjan, 330 kg u. Peter Wenzel, 327.5 kg.

Jordan Mitkow was injured at the beginning of 1977 and only slowly got back into shape in the following months. For this reason, he finished at the Junior World Championships 1977 in Sofia with middleweight with 300 kg (135-165) only 4th place. The winner there was the Cuban Zayas with 330 kg. At the World and European Championships in Stuttgart in 1977 he was in better shape again, but the 327.5 kg (147.5-180) he achieved only reached 5th place in the middleweight division. World and European champion was in Stuttgart Wartan Militosjan with 342.5 kg in front of Peter Wenzel with 337.5 kg in a duel.

Because of a renewed injury, Jordan Mitkow dropped out for the entire competition year 1978 and was only able to start again in the spring of 1979 at the 5th National Spartakiade (e.g. Bulgarian Championship) in Sofia . He achieved there with 342.5 kg (152.5-190) again an excellent result and referred Nedeltscho Kolew , who reached 332.5 kg in 2nd place. At the European Championships in 1979 in Varna, he increased again to 345 kg (155-190) and won with this performance in front of Nedeltscho Kolew, 337.5 kg and Peter Wenzel, 332.5 kg. At the 1979 World Cup in Saloniki he was surprised by the Cuban Roberto Urrutia , who like Nedeltscho Kolew tore 155 kg. He himself only came to 150 kg in the snatch and therefore had to take a high risk in jerking and start the competition with 190 kg. But this weight was too high for him that day. He did not make it three times and was therefore eliminated without a duel.

In 1980 Jordan Mitkow finished in the Bulgarian championship with 345 kg (150-195) behind the new star Assen Slatew , 352.5 kg (157.5-195) and Nedeltscho Kolew , 350 kg (160-190) only 3rd place and was therefore used in 1980 neither at the European Championships in Belgrade , nor at the Olympic Games in Moscow .

He then ended his career in weightlifting, in which, in contrast to many other Bulgarian weightlifters, he could never be convicted of doping. Nothing is known about his further life.
