Nedeltscho Lasarow Kolew ( Bulgarian Неделчо Лазаров Колев ; born March 26, 1953 in Kableschkowo , Burgas province ) is a former Bulgarian weightlifter . He won a bronze medal at the 1980 Olympic Games and was middleweight world champion in 1973 and 1974 respectively.

Career

Nedeltscho Kolew from Sofia began lifting weights as a teenager. He was one of the young athletes who had been initiated by the Bulgarian national coach Ivan Abadschiew , who had been in office since 1969 , and in which young athletes were intensively promoted. He found his economic support as a member of the army.

Already in 1970 and 1971 he started in several international competitions. Among other things, he won the 1972 Grand Prix of Berlin (East) in the lightweight weight of 397.5 kg. For the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich , however, he was not yet able to qualify for the Bulgarian team. Since Nedeltscho Kolew's forte was snapping and thrusting, the 1973 international weightlifting federation (IMF) abolished pushing suited him very well. In the duel (tearing and pushing) he was from 1973 in the middleweight division, into which he had grown in the meantime, to the absolute world elite.

He proved this at the European Championships in Madrid in 1973 , where he was with 330 kg (145-185) new European champion before the 1972 Olympic champion Jordan Bikow , who came to 322.5 kg. A few months later he was also world middleweight champion in Havana . He reached there in a duel 337.5 kg (147.5-190) and thus won superiorly in front of Peter Wenzel , GDR , 317.5 kg and András Stark , Hungary , 312.5 kg.

1974 Nedeltscho Kolew repeated these successes. He was in Verona middleweight with 340 kg (152.5–187.5) European champion in front of Peter Wenzel, 327.5 kg a. Viktor Kurenzow , USSR , 325 kg and also won the World Championships in Manila , where 335 kg (150-185) were enough to win the title in front of his compatriot R. Rusew, 332.5 kg and Peter Wenzel, 322.5 kg.

In 1975 Nedeltscho Kolew was no longer in the form of 1973 and 1974. Although he started at the World and European Championships that year in Moscow , there was only 325 kg (145-180) in the middleweight division, which is behind his Compatriot Jordan Mitkow , 345 kg (155–190) and Peter Wenzel, 332.5 kg, came in 3rd place.

In the years 1976 to 1978 Nedeltscho Kolew suffered from a protracted injury, so that he could not take part in any competitions during those years. In 1979 he made a comeback. He took second place at the 5th National Spartakiade in Sofia with 332.5 kg (152.5-180) behind Jordan Mitkow , 342.5 kg, and was nominated for this year's European Championship in Varna . In Varna he reached 337.5 kg (150–187.5) with which he came in second behind Jordan Mitkow, 345 kg (155–190). He finally took the same place at the 1979 World Cup in Saloniki , where he reached 342.5 kg (155-187.5). He was only beaten there by Roberto Urrutia from Cuba , who achieved 345 kg (155-190).

In 1980 Nedeltscho Kolew managed at the Bulgarian championship in middleweight 350 kg (160-190). He had to surrender to the newcomer Assen Slatew , who lifted 352.5 kg (157.5-195). But his performance was so good that he was used by the Bulgarian Association next to Slatew both at the European Championships in Belgrade and at the Olympic Games in Moscow . In Belgrade he achieved 347.5 kg (160-187.5) and finished behind Assen Slatew, 355 kg, 2nd place and at the Olympic Games he came to 345 kg (157.5-187.5). With this result he won the Olympic bronze medal behind Assen Slatew, 360 kg (160-200) and the young Soviet athlete Alexander Pervi , 357.5 kg.

Nedeltscho Kolew, who had attended the sports college in Sofia, then ended his active career and worked as a trainer.
