Assen Slatew (born May 23, 1960 in Zarimir , Plovdiv Oblast ) is a former Bulgarian weightlifter .

Career

Slatew's first international competition was the 1980 European Championship in Belgrade . He competed in the middle weight up to 75 kg and took first place with 355 kg in a duel before Nedeltscho Kolew and Alexander Perwi . Thus Slatew was used in his first international year of competition for the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow . There he won gold with 360 kg, again ahead of Perwi and Kolew.

Thereupon Slatew switched to the light heavyweight up to 82.5 kg, where he developed into the main competitor of Jurik Wardanjan . In 1981 at the World Championships in Lille , Vardanyan, who was stronger in pushing, was able to relegate Slatew to second place with 392.5 kg to 372.5 kg. Both tore 170 kg, but Vardanyan hit a new world record of 223.0 kg , which was 20 kg more than Slatew's 202.5 kg.

Since Vardanyan competed at the 1982 World Cup in the middleweight division up to 90 kg, Slatew won gold in a duel with 400 kg. In 1983 the two competitors met again. At the World Cup in Moscow, both competed in the light heavyweight division. After both of them had once again mastered the same load in snatching 180 kg, Wardanyan won the gold medal with 2.5 kg more in pushing against Slatew with 390.0 kg.

Due to the Olympic boycott of the socialist states in 1984 Slatew could not take part in these games. The gold medal in the light heavyweight up to 82.5 kg went to Petre Becheru , who achieved 355.0 kg in a duel, a burden that Slatew would certainly have been able to do.

At the next duel between Slatew and Wardanjan in 1985 in Södertälje , Wardanjan was able to secure all three gold medals again with his superiority in jerking. Slatew won silver three times. After the resignation of Vardanyan Slatew won the World Cup in his own country in Sofia in 1986 sovereign by setting Vardanyan's world record in a duel of 405.0 kg.

At his last world championship in 1987 Slatew was able to win the bronze medal with 375.0 kg in a duel. After two Bulgarian gold medalists were proven doping in lower classes at the Olympic Games in Seoul in 1988 , Bulgaria withdrew its entire team. So Slatew was again taken the chance for an Olympic medal.
