Horace R. Kornegay

Horace Robinson Kornegay (born March 12, 1924 in Asheville , North Carolina , †  January 21, 2009 in Greensboro , North Carolina) was an American politician .

Kornegay attended Wake Forest College , where he received his Bachelor of Science degree in 1947 . During this time Kornegay served from December 14, 1942 to February 1, 1946 in the United States Army and was used in Europe. He received his Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) in 1949 and was admitted to the bar that same year. Kornegay now began to practice in Greensboro. After serving as assistant district attorney from 1951 to 1953, he was elected District Attorney for District 12 of North Carolina in 1954. In 1958 he was re-elected.

Kornegay was politically active in the Democratic Party . In 1964 he was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in Atlantic City and was elected for his party in the 87th Congress and the following three congresses. There he represented the state of North Carolina in the House of Representatives of the United States from January 3, 1961 to January 3, 1969 . In 1968 he decided not to run again.

After retiring from politics, Kornegay worked for Tobacco Institute, Inc. , where he held the positions of Vice President (January 1969 to June 1970), President (June 1970 to February 1981) and Chairman of the Board (February 1982 to December 1986). He then began practicing law in Greensboro again in January 1987 and lived in that city until his death in 2009.
