James Turner Morehead (politician, 1799)

James Turner Morehead (born January 11, 1799 in Rockingham County , North Carolina , †  May 5, 1875 in Greensboro , North Carolina) was an American politician . Between 1851 and 1853 he represented the state of North Carolina in the US House of Representatives .

Career

James Morehead attended the public schools of his home country and then studied until 1819 at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill . After a subsequent law degree and his admission as a lawyer, he began to work in Greensboro in this profession. In 1832, 1834 and 1835 he was the de facto Commissioner Mayor of Greensboro. In the 1830s, Morehead became a member of the Whig Party . Between 1835 and 1842 he sat several times in the North Carolina Senate . From 1836 to 1868 he was a curator at the University of North Carolina.

In the congressional election of 1850 , Morehead was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the fourth constituency of North Carolina , where he succeeded Augustine Henry Shepperd on March 4, 1851 . Since he refused to run again in 1852, he was only able to complete one legislative period in Congress until March 3, 1853 . This was determined by the discussions and events leading up to the civil war . The main issue was slavery .

After leaving the US House of Representatives, Morehead practiced law again. He also worked in agriculture and ran an ironworks. James Morehead died in Greensboro on May 5, 1875. He was the younger brother of Governor John Motley Morehead .
