The Réserve écologique Jackrabbit is one in 1981 under the name réserve écologique des Laurentides on an initial area of 604  ha equipped (since 1992 but 750 ha enlarged) reserve in the south of the Canadian province of Quebec .

It is located in the regional county municipality of Les Laurentides in the Laurentine Mountains - hence the original name - but after the enlargement in 1992 it was not named after the real hare , as it is called in English, but after the nickname Jackrabbit for the skier Herman Smith-Johannsen . In 1928 he organized the first slalom competition in Canada on Mont Tremblant . The area protects the Lower Laurentides of the Mauricie and Lac Nominingue , where the yellow birch predominates.

Micropterus

As is often the case in the Laurentides, the surface is rather flat and interspersed with numerous depressions. It is between 400 and 550  m above sea level. The depressions are up to 250 and 300  m high. These are mostly overlaid with the thicker Tillit layers from the last Ice Age, plus layers of organic material that are also thinner in the higher areas. Alluvial land is found on the waters.

In addition to the yellow birch, the American beech , a species of the hop beech genus ( Ostrya virginiana (Mill.) K. Koch ) and the American elm are represented in the protected area , with the latter predominating in the higher elevations. In contrast, the balsam fir is more likely to be found on the lower slopes and in less humid depressions.

Here are deer before, as well as beaver and elk. Other important bird species include the collar grouse , loons , ducks, gulls, then the king tyrant , the red-tailed buzzard and the red-shouldered blackbird . The brook char and the American char whose scientific name Salvelinus namaycush goes back to the Anishinabe word namegos , which means gray char, or namegoshens , which can be translated as rainbow char . In addition, there is the Micropterus , which is known as Achigan (French) or Black Bass (English). Both types of fish are common in the lakes in the reserve.
