John Wilbur Atwater

John Wilbur Atwater (born December 27, 1840 in Fearrington , Chatham County , North Carolina , †  July 4, 1910 ibid) was an American politician . Between 1899 and 1901 he represented the state of North Carolina in the US House of Representatives .

Career

John Atwater attended his homeland public schools and the William Closs Academy . Then he became a farmer. During the Civil War he served in the Confederate Army under the direct command of General Robert Edward Lee . He was also present at the latter's surrender at Appomattox Court House .

In the 1880s Atwater joined the farming movement and became its chairman in Chatham County. He later became a member of the Populist Party . He was elected to the North Carolina Senate in 1890, 1892, and 1896 . In the congressional election of 1898 Atwater was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the fourth constituency of his state , where he succeeded William Franklin Strowd on March 4, 1899 . Since he was not confirmed in 1900, he could only serve one term in Congress until March 3, 1901 .

After leaving the US House of Representatives, Atwater withdrew from politics. In the following years he worked again as a farmer. He died on July 4, 1910 in his native Fearrington.
