William Alexander Smith

William Alexander Smith (born January 9, 1828 in Warren County , North Carolina , †  May 16, 1888 in Richmond , Virginia ) was an American politician . Between 1873 and 1875 he represented the state of North Carolina in the US House of Representatives .

Career

William Smith attended public schools in his home country and then worked in agriculture. At the same time he began a political career as a member of the Republican Party . In 1865 he was a member of a convention to revise the North Carolina Constitution; In 1870 he was elected to the Senate of that state. From 1868 he was president of the North Carolina Railroad .

In the congressional elections of 1872 Smith was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the fourth constituency of North Carolina , where he succeeded Democrat Sion Hart Rogers on March 4, 1873 . Until March 3, 1875 he was able to complete a legislative term in Congress . After leaving the US House of Representatives, William Smith held no further political office. He died in Richmond on May 16, 1888.
