Bartlett Yancey
Bartlett Yancey (born February 19, 1785 in Yanceyville , Caswell County , North Carolina , † August 30, 1828 there ) was an American politician . Between 1813 and 1817 he represented the state of North Carolina in the US House of Representatives .
Career
Bartlett Yancey was a cousin of John Kerr (1792-1842), who sat in Congress for the state of Virginia . He attended a private school and then the Hyco Academy in Caswell County. Between 1804 and 1806, Yancey studied at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill . After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1807, he began to work in his new profession.
Politically, Yancey was a member of the Democratic Republican Party . In the congressional election of 1812 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the ninth constituency of North Carolina , where he succeeded James Cochran on March 4, 1813 . After re-election, he was able to complete two legislative terms in Congress until March 3, 1817 . During this time the British-American War ended . During his time as a MP, Yancey also chaired the Committee on Claims .
In 1816, Bartlett Yancey renounced another candidacy. Between 1817 and 1827 he was a member and president of the North Carolina Senate . He died on August 30, 1828 near Yanceyville and was buried in the family cemetery.
