Charles Johnson (politician)

Charles Johnson (born around 1752 in Chowan County , Province of North Carolina , †  July 23, 1802 in Edenton , North Carolina ) was an American politician . In 1801 and 1802 he represented the state of North Carolina in the US House of Representatives .

Career

After a good education, Charles Johnson began working as a planter . He later began a political career. In 1781, 1784 and 1785 he was elected to the Continental Congress, but he stayed away from its meetings. Between 1781 and 1792 he sat several times in the North Carolina Senate .

In the 1790s Johnson became a member of the Democratic Republican Party founded by the later US President Thomas Jefferson . In the 1800 congressional elections , he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the first constituency of North Carolina , where he succeeded Joseph Dickson on March 4, 1801 . Charles Johnson was unable to end his legislative term in Congress, which actually ran until March 3, 1803 , because he died on July 23, 1802.
