William HH Cowles

William Henry Harrison Cowles (born April 22, 1840 in Hamptonville , Yadkin County , North Carolina , †  December 30, 1901 in Wilkesboro , North Carolina) was an American politician . Between 1885 and 1893 he represented the state of North Carolina in the US House of Representatives .

Career

William Cowles was the uncle of Congressman Charles H. Cowles (1875–1957). He attended the public schools in his home country. During the civil war he rose to the rank of lieutenant colonel in the Confederation Army . After a subsequent law degree and his admission as a lawyer in 1868, he began to work in Wilkesboro in this profession. Between 1872 and 1874 he was an administrative clerk with the North Carolina Senate . From 1874 to 1878, Cowles served as the district attorney in his state's tenth judicial district.

Politically, he was a member of the Democratic Party , which he chaired in North Carolina for eight years. In the 1884 congressional election , Cowles was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the eighth constituency of his state , where he succeeded Robert Vance on March 4, 1885 . After three re-elections, he was able to complete four legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1893 . From 1887 to 1889 he was chairman of the Ministry of Justice's Expenditure Control Committee; from 1891 to 1893 he headed the mining committee.

In 1892, William Cowles renounced another congressional candidacy. In the following years he worked in agriculture; he has also worked in various other industries. He died on December 30, 1901 in Wilkesboro.
