William H. Bower

William Horton Bower (born June 6, 1850 in Wilkesboro , North Carolina , †  May 11, 1910 in Lenoir , North Carolina) was an American politician . Between 1893 and 1895 he represented the state of North Carolina in the US House of Representatives .

Career

William Bower attended Finley High School in Lenoir. After studying law and his admission as a lawyer in 1870, he began to work in Lenoir in this profession. In 1876 he moved to California , where he worked as a teacher for four years. Then he returned to Lenoir. Politically, Bower became a member of the Democratic Party . In 1882 he was elected to the North Carolina House of Representatives. Two years later he was a member of the State Senate . Between 1885 and 1886 he served as a prosecutor in the tenth judicial district of his state.

In 1890 Bower ran unsuccessfully for Congress . In the congressional elections of 1892 he was then elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the eighth constituency of North Carolina , where he succeeded William HH Cowles on March 4, 1893 . Since he was not confirmed in 1894, he could only serve one term in Congress until March 3, 1895. After leaving the US House of Representatives, Bower practiced as a lawyer in Lenoir. He died there on May 11, 1910.
