Charles Robin Britt (born June 29, 1942 in San Antonio , Texas ) is an American politician . Between 1983 and 1985 he represented the state of North Carolina in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Charles Britt grew up in Asheville, North Carolina, where he attended public schools including high school until 1959. This was followed by a study at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill until 1963 . After studying law at the same university and being admitted to the bar in 1973, he began working in this profession in Greensboro . Meanwhile studied in 1976 at New York University in New York City . Between 1963 and 1984, Britt was a member of the United States Navy Reserve .

Politically, he joined the Democratic Party . From 1979 to 1981 he was party chairman in Guilford County . In 1980 he was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention as well as to the regional party congress in his home country. In the 1982 congressional election , Britt was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the sixth constituency of North Carolina , where he succeeded Republican Walter E. Johnston on January 3, 1983 , whom he had previously defeated. Since he lost to Howard Coble in 1984 , he was only able to serve one term in Congress until January 3, 1985 . In 1986 he was defeated by Coble again by only 79 votes.

After leaving the US House of Representatives, Britt became head of Project Uplift in Greensboro. Between 1993 and 1997 he was Secretary of Human Resources in the State Government of North Carolina. He was then a member of Governor Jim Hunt's advisory board until 1998 . In 2002 he unsuccessfully sought his party's nomination for the congressional elections. Today Charles Britt lives in Greensboro.
