Guilford County is a county in the state of North Carolina in the United States . The county seat is Greensboro , named after Nathaniel Greene , a general in the American Revolutionary War .

The county is located northwest of the geographic center of North Carolina, is about 40 km to the north from Virginia and has an area of ​​1,703 square kilometers, of which 21 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Rockingham County , Alamance County , Randolph County , Davidson County, and Forsyth County .

Guilford County is divided into 18 townships : Bruce, Center Grove, Clay, Deep River, Fentress, Friendship, Gilmer, Greene, High Point, Jamestown, Jefferson, Madison, Monroe, Morehead, Oak Ridge, Rock Creek, Sumner and Washington.

Guilford County was formed on April 1, 1771 from parts of Rowan County. It was named after Francis North, 1st Earl Guilford .

The county has a National Military Park , the Guilford Courthouse National Military Park . Another location in the county has National Historic Landmark status , the Blandwood Mansion and Gardens . A total of 107 buildings and sites in the county are registered on the National Register of Historic Places (as of February 21, 2018).

According to the 2000 census , Guilford County had 421,048 people in 168,667 households and 109,802 families. The population density was 250 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 64.53 percent white, 29.27 percent African American, 0.46 percent Native American, 2.44 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 1.81 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.45 percent were descended from two or more races. The median income for a household in the county is $ 42,618, and the median income for a family is $ 52,638. Males had a median income of $ 35,940 versus $ 27,092 for females. The per capita income was $ 23,340. 10.6 percent of the population and 7.6 percent of families are below the poverty line. 13.8 percent of them are children and young people under 18 years of age and 9.9 percent are 65 years of age or older.
