Catawba County is a county in the state of North Carolina in the United States . The county seat is Newton , which was named after Isaac Newton Wilson .
geography
The county is located in west-central North Carolina, about 75 km south of South Carolina and has an area of 1,071 square kilometers, of which 35 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Alexander County , Iredell County , Lincoln County , Burke County, and Caldwell Counties .
Catawba County is divided into eight townships : Bandy's, Caldwell, Catawba, Clines, Hickory, Jacobs Fork, Mountain Creek, Newton, and Longview.
history
Catawba County was formed from parts of Lincoln County on December 12, 1842. It was named after the Catawba Indians who fought alongside the patriots in the American War of Independence . The area was settled mainly by German immigrants who came to the area from Pennsylvania around 1740 .

As of the 2000 census , Catawba County had 141,685 people in 55,533 households and 39,095 families. The population density was 137 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 84.99 percent white, 8.37 percent African American, 0.26 percent Native American, 2.93 percent Asian, 0.05 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 2.26 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.14 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.57 percent of the population.
Of the 55,533 households, 31.5 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 55.1 percent of these were married couples living together, 10.9 percent were single mothers and 29.6 percent were non-families. 24.6 percent were single households and 9.1 percent had people 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.51 and the average family size was 2.98 people.
24.3 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 8.8 percent were between 18 and 24 years old, 31.1 percent between 25 and 44 years old, 23.5 percent between 45 and 64, and 12.3 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For all females there were 97.3 males. For all women aged 18 or over there were 94.7 men.
The median income for a household in the city is $ 40,536, and the median income for a family is $ 47,474. Males had a median income of $ 30,822 versus $ 23,352 for females. The per capita income was $ 20,358.
10% of the population and 6.5% of families are below the poverty line. 12.5 percent of them are children and young people under 18 years of age and 9.7 percent are 65 years of age or older.
