Chatham County is a county in the state of North Carolina in the United States . The county seat is Pittsboro .

The county is located in the geographic center of North Carolina and has an area of ​​1,836 square kilometers, of which 68 square kilometers are water. It is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Orange County , Durham County , Wake County , Harnett County , Lee County , Moore County , Randolph County, and Alamance County .

Chatham County is divided into 13 townships : Albright, Baldwin, Bear Creek, Cape Fear, Center, Gulf, Hadley, Haw River, Hickory Mountain, Matthews, New Hope, Oakland, and Williams.

history

Chatham County was formed on April 1, 1771 from parts of Orange County. Like the district capital Pittsboro, it was named after William Pitt, 1st Earl of Chatham , a British Prime Minister.

According to the 2000 census , Chatham County had 49,329 people in 19,741 households and 13,858 families. The population density was 28 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 74.94 percent white, 17.07 percent African American, 0.41 percent Native American, 0.59 percent Asian, 0.04 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 5.81 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.13 percent were descended from two or more races. The median income for a household in the city is $ 42,851, and the median income for a family is $ 50,909. Males had a median income of $ 32,980 versus $ 26,044 for females.
