Dare County is a county in the state of North Carolina in the United States . The county seat is Manteo , named after the Indian chief Sir Walter Raleigh took with him to England .

The county is located in the far east of North Carolina, about 30 km from the Atlantic Ocean and has an area of ​​4044 square kilometers, of which 3051 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Hyde County and Tyrrell Counties .

history

Dare County was formed on February 2, 1870. It was named after Virginia Dare , who is believed to be the first child of English parents to be born in America.

The county has a National Historic Site and a National Memorial , the Fort Raleigh National Historic Site, and the Wright Brothers National Memorial . Three places in the county have National Historic Landmark status , the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse , the wreck of the USS Monitor, and the Wright Brothers National Memorial Visitor Center . A total of 27 buildings and sites in the county are registered in the National Register of Historic Places (as of February 21, 2018).

According to the 2000 census , there were 29,967 people in 12,690 households and 8,451 families in Dare County. The population density was 30 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 94.75 percent white, 2.66 percent African American, 0.28 percent Native American, 0.37 percent Asian, 0.04 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.90 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.00 percent were descended from two or more races. 2.22 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 42,411, and the median income for a family is $ 49,302. Males had a median income of $ 31,240 versus $ 24,318 for females. The per capita income was $ 23,614. 8.0 percent of the population and 5.5 percent of families are below the poverty line. 9.9 percent of them are children and young people under 18 years of age and 5.3 percent are 65 years of age or older.
