Gates County is a county in the state of North Carolina in the United States . The county seat is Gatesville .

The county is located in northeast North Carolina, borders Virginia to the north and has an area of ​​895 square kilometers, of which 13 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Camden County , Pasquotank County , Perquimans County , Chowan County, and Hertford County .

Gates County is divided into seven townships : Gatesville, Hall, Haslett, Holly Grove, Hunters Mill, Mintonsville, and Reynoldson.

history

Gates County was formed in 1778 from parts of Chowan County, Hertford County, and Perquimans County. It was named, like the district capital Gatesville, after Horatio Gates , a commanding general of the US Army at the Battle of Saratoga .

Ten buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of March 2, 2018).

As of the 2000 census , Gates County had 10,516 people in 3,901 households and 2,933 families. The population density was 12 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 59.08 percent white, 39.18 percent African American, 0.42 percent Native American, 0.25 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.10 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.94 percent were descended from two or more races. The median income for a household in the county is $ 35,647, and the median income for a family is $ 41,511. Males had a median income of $ 32,227 versus $ 21,014 for females. The per capita income was $ 15,963. 17.0 percent of the population and 14.5 percent of families are below the poverty line. 17.9 percent of them are children and adolescents under 18 years of age and 26.2 percent are 65 years of age or older.
