Columbus County is a county in the state of North Carolina in the United States . The county seat is Whiteville , named after James White who made the land available for the city. Columbus County ranks 7th among tobacco-producing counties in the United States.

The county is located almost in the extreme southwest of North Carolina, borders South Carolina in the southwest , is about 60 km from the Atlantic Ocean in the east and has an area of ​​2,470 square kilometers, of which 44 square kilometers are water. It is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Bladen County , Pender County , Brunswick County, and Robeson County .

Columbus County is divided into 15 townships : Bogue, Bolton, Bug Hill, Cerro Gordo, Chadbourn, Fair Bluff, Lees, Ransom, South Williams, Tatums, Lake Waccamaw, Welch Creek, Western Prong, Whiteville and Williams.

history

Columbus County was formed on December 15, 1808 from parts of Bladen County and Brunswick County. It was named in memory of Christopher Columbus .

The Lake Waccamaw Depot (2009) is one of four entries for the county on the National Register of Historic Places .

Four buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of February 24, 2018).

As of the 2000 census , Columbus County's population was 54,749. Of these, 1,379 people lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 21,308 households and 15,043 families. The population density was 23 inhabitants per square kilometer. The median income for a household (median) was 26 805  US $ , and the median income for a family $ 33,849. Males had a median income of $ 28,494 and females $ 19,867. The per capita income was $ 14,415. 22.7 percent of the population and 17.6 percent of families are below the poverty line. 30.0 percent of them are children and young people under the age of 18 and 25.5 percent are 65 years of age or older.
