Cleveland County is a county in the US state of North Carolina in the United States . The county seat is Shelby , named after Colonel Isaac Shelby , an officer in the American Revolutionary War.

The county is located in west-central North Carolina, bordering South Carolina to the south and has an area of 1,214 square kilometers, of which 10 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Burke County , Lincoln County , Gaston County, and Rutherford County .
Cleveland County is divided into eleven numbered townships : 1 (River), 2 (Boiling Springs), 3 (Rippy), 4 (Kings Mountain), 5 (Warlick), 6 (Shelby), 7 (Sandy Run), 8 (Polkville ), 9 (Double Shoals), 10 (Knob Creek) and 11 (Casar).
history
Cleveland County was formed on January 11, 1841 from parts of Lincoln County. It was named after Benjamin Cleveland , a colonel in the American Revolutionary War and hero at the Battle of Kings Mountain . The spelling was changed from Cleaveland to the more common current form in 1887 during the presidency of Grover Cleveland .
A total of 23 buildings and sites in the county are registered on the National Register of Historic Places (as of February 24, 2018).

According to the 2000 census , Cleveland County had 96,287 people in 37,046 households and 27,006 families. The population density was 80 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 76.81 percent white, 20.93 percent African American, 0.15 percent Native American, 0.69 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.68 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.72 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.49 percent of the population.
Of the 37,046 households, 32.2 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 55.0 percent of these were married couples living together, 13.7 percent were single mothers and 27.1 percent were non-families. 23.6 percent were single households and 9.6 percent had people 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.53 and the average family size was 2.98 people.
25.2 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 8.8 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 28.8 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 23.7 percent between 45 and 64, and 13.5 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For all females there were 92.6 males. For all women aged 18 or over there were 88.6 men.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 35,283, and the median income for a family is $ 41,733. Males had a median income of $ 30,882 versus $ 21,995 for females. The per capita income was $ 17,395. 13.3 percent of the population and 10.1 percent of families are below the poverty line. 17.9 percent of them are children and adolescents under the age of 18 and 14.0 percent are 65 years or older.
