Scotland County is a county in the state of North Carolina in the United States . The county seat is Laurinburg , named after the McLaurin family , early settlers in the area.

The county is located in southern North Carolina, bordering South Carolina and has an area of ​​830 square kilometers, of which 4 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Hoke County , Robeson County, and Richmond County .

Scotland County is divided into four townships : Laurel Hill, Spring Hill, Stewartsville and Williamson.

history

Scotland County was formed on February 20, 1899 from parts of Richmond County. It was named after the home of the early settlers , most of whom came from Scotland .

According to the 2000 census , Scotland County's population was 35,998. Of these, 977 people lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 13,399 households and 9,674 families.
