Bertie County is a county in the state of North Carolina in the United States . The county seat is Windsor , which was named after the House of Windsor .

The county is located in northeast North Carolina, about 50 km north of Virginia and has an area of 1,920 square kilometers, of which 109 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Hertford County , Chowan County , Washington County , Martin County , Halifax County, and Northampton County .
Bertie County is divided into nine townships : Colerain, Indian Woods, Merry Hill, Mitchells, Roxobel, Snake Bite, Whites, Windsor, and Woodville.
history
Bertie County was formed on August 2, 1722 from parts of Chowan County. It was named after the former Lord Proprietors of the Carolina Province , James and Henry Bertie .
A total of 23 buildings and sites in the county are registered on the National Register of Historic Places (as of February 23, 2018).

According to the 2000 census , there were 19,773 people in 7,743 households and 5,427 families in Bertie County. The population density was 11 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 36.30 percent white, 62.34 percent African American, 0.44 percent Native American, 0.11 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.33 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.48 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.99 percent of the population.
Of the 7,743 households, 29.7 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 46.0 percent of these were married couples living together, 20.1 percent were single mothers and 29.9 percent were non-families. 27.0 percent were single households and 13.1 percent had people 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.53 and the average family size was 3.07.
26.1 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 7.7 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 26.4 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 23.8 percent between 45 and 64, and 16.0 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For all females there were 87.6 males. For all women aged 18 or over there were 82.0 men.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 25,177, and the median income for a family is $ 30,186. Males had a median income of $ 26,866 versus $ 18,318 for females. The per capita income was $ 14,096. 23.5 percent of the population and 19.3 percent of families are below the poverty line. 30.7 percent of them are children and adolescents under 18 years of age and 28.3 percent are 65 years of age or older.
