Alleghany County is a county in the state of North Carolina in the United States . The administrative seat ( county seat ) is Sparta , which was named after the city of the same name Sparta in Greece .

The county is located in northwest North Carolina, borders Virginia to the north , is 45 km from Tennessee to the west , and covers an area of ​​610 square kilometers, of which 2 square kilometers are water. In North Carolina, it is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Surry County , Wilkes County, and Ashe Counties .

Alleghany County is divided into seven townships : Cherry Lane, Cranberry, Gap Civil, Glade Creek, Piney Creek, Prathers Creek, and Whitehead.

history

Alleghany County was formed in 1859 from parts of Ashe County. It was named after the Allegheny River or, according to other sources, after an Indian tribe.

According to the 2000 census , Alleghany County, North Carolina, had 10,677 people in 4,593 households and 3,169 families. The population density was 18 people per square kilometer.
