Alexander County is a county in the state of North Carolina in the United States and is part of the Hickory-Morganton-Lenoir Metro Area . The county seat is Taylorsville , which was named after General Zachary Taylor .
geography
The county is located in west-central North Carolina, largely in the Brushy Mountains , about 70 km to the north from Virginia , about 80 km to the northwest from Tennessee , and has an area of 682 square kilometers, of which 8 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Wilkes County , Iredell County , Catawba County, and Caldwell County .
Alexander County is divided into seven townships : Ellendale, Gwaltneys, Little River, Millers, Sharpes, Sugar Loaf, Taylorsville, and Wittenburg .
history
Alexander County was formed on January 15, 1847 from parts of Caldwell County, Iredell County and Wilkes County. It was named after the Alexander family, whose members were early proponents of colonizing the area.
One building in the county is listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of February 21, 2018), the Lucas Mansion .

Alexander County's population of 33,603 was as of the 2000 census . 235 of them lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 13,137 households and 9,747 families. The population density was 50 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 92.00 percent white, 4.63 percent African American, 0.15 percent Native American, 1.04 percent Asian and 1.34 percent from other ethnic groups; about 0.84 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 2.50 percent of the population.
Of the 13,137 households, 32.8 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 60.5 percent of these were married couples living together, 9.4 percent were single mothers and 25.8 percent were non-families. 21.9 percent were single households and 8.4 percent had people 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.54 and the average family size was 2.95 people.
24.5 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 7.9 percent between 18 and 24 years, 31.1 percent between 25 and 44 years, 24.6 percent between 45 and 64, and 11.9 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For all females there were 99.4 males. For all women aged 18 or over there were 96.7 men.
The median income for a household in the 38,684 US $ and the median income for a family was $ 45,691. Males had a median income of $ 29,857 versus $ 21,868 for females. The per capita income was $ 18,507. 8.5 percent of the population and 5.9 percent of families are below the poverty line. 10.2 percent of them are children and young people under 18 years of age and 14.6 percent are 65 years of age or older.
