Wake County is a county in the state of North Carolina in the United States . The county seat is Raleigh , named after Sir Walter Raleigh , an English navigator , explorer and writer and favorite of Queen Elizabeth I of England .

geography

The county is located slightly northeast of the geographic center of North Carolina and has an area of ​​2220 square kilometers, of which 66 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Granville County , Franklin County , Johnston County , Harnett County , Chatham County , Durham County, and Nash County .

Wake County is divided into 20 townships : Bartons Creek, Buckhorn, Cary, Cedar Fork, Holly Springs, House Creek, Leesville, Little River, Marks Creek, Meredith, Middle Creek, Neuse, New Light, Panther Branch, Raleigh, St. Mary's , St. Matthew's, Swift Creek, Wake Forest, and White Oak.

history

Wake County was formed in 1771 from parts of Cumberland County, Johnston County, and Orange County. It was named after Margaret Wake , the wife of Governor William Tryon .

There are three National Historic Landmarks in the county , the North Carolina State Capitol , Christ Episcopal Church, and Josephus Daniels House . A total of 215 buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of March 17, 2018).

According to the 2000 census , Wake County had 627,846 people in 242,040 households and 158,778 families. The population density was 291 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 72.40 percent white, 19.72 percent African American, 0.34 percent Native American, 3.38 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 2.48 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.64 percent were descended from two or more races. The median income for a household in the city is $ 54,988, and the median income for a family is $ 67,149. Males had a median income of $ 44,472 versus $ 31,579 for females. The per capita income was $ 27,004. 7.8 percent of the population and 4.9 percent of families are below the poverty line. 8.6 percent of them are children and young people under 18 years of age and 8.9 percent are 65 years of age or older.
