Virginia Dare (born August 18, 1587 in Roanoke ; † unknown) is considered the first English child to be born in the New World in what is now the United States .

Virginia Dare's parents were Eleanor and Ananias Dare. Eleanor Dare was the daughter of John White , who was part of Sir Walter Raleigh's expedition , who founded the first English colony in America in 1585 on Roanoke Island in eastern North Carolina .

After John White returned from England from collecting provisions in 1590, he found no trace of the English settlers, and with that the trace of little Virginia is lost. The place where the English settlers disappeared is called The Lost Colony .

Among other things, Dare County in North Carolina was named after Virginia Dare .
