Greene County is a county in the state of North Carolina in the United States . The county seat is Snow Hill .

The county is located in east-central North Carolina and has an area of 689 square kilometers, of which 1 square kilometer is water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Pitt County , Lenoir County , Wayne County, and Wilson County .
Greene County is divided into nine townships : Bull Head, Carrs, Hookerton, Jason, Olds, Ormonds, Shine, Snow Hill and Speights Bridge.
history
Greene County was formed in 1791 from the former Dobbs County as Glasgow County. In 1799 it was renamed Greene County after Nathaniel Greene , a major general in the American Revolutionary War .
Twelve buildings and sites in the county are registered in the National Register of Historic Places (as of March 2, 2018).

According to the 2000 census , Greene County had 18,974 people in 6,696 households and 4,955 families. The population density was 28 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 51.83 percent white, 41.21 percent African American, 0.30 percent Native American, 0.09 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 5.75 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.80 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 7.96 percent of the population.
Of the 6,696 households, 34.3 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 52.1 percent of these were married couples living together, 17.3 percent were single mothers and 26.0 percent were non-families. 22.6 percent were single households and 10.0 percent had people 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.65 and the average family size was 3.09 people.
25.3 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 9.4 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 30.9 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 22.3 percent between 45 and 64, and 12.1 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For all females there were 105.7 males. For all women aged 18 or over there were 103.9 men.
The median income for a household in the city is $ 32,074, and the median income for a family is $ 36,419. Males had a median income of $ 27,048 versus $ 21,351 for females. The per capita income was $ 15,452. 20.2 percent of the population and 16.0 percent of families are below the poverty line. 28.3 percent of them are children and adolescents under 18 years of age and 20.5 percent are 65 years of age or older.
