Juan María Bordaberry Arocena (born June 17, 1928 in Montevideo , † July 17, 2011 there ) was a Uruguayan politician and dictator . He was President of Uruguay from 1972 to 1976 , and from 1973 he ruled the South American country with a civil-military dictatorship.

Life

Juan María Bordaberry was born into a family of large landowners. He got into politics through the Liga Federal de Acción Ruralista , the lobbying association for agrarians . In 1969 he joined the Partido Colorado and was Minister of Agriculture from 1969 to 1972 under President Jorge Pacheco Areco . On November 28, 1971 , he was elected his successor and - in the midst of an economic crisis - took office on March 1, 1972. He tried to get a grip on the situation with authoritarian measures and appointed members of the military to the government. Under pressure from the military, he dissolved parliament, suspended civil rights and banned trade unions . However, these measures did not have the success desired by the military, and so Bordaberry removed it in 1976.

On February 10, 2010, a Montevideo court sentenced him to 30 years in prison. He was accused of violating the constitution and establishing a civil-military dictatorship. Bordaberry had been in custody for violent political crimes since November 2006, but since January 2007 he has been serving the sentence under house arrest for health reasons .

family

Juan María Bordaberry's son is the politician Pedro Bordaberry , who ran for the 2009 presidential election in Uruguay.
