Elections in Uruguay in 1971
The presidential and parliamentary elections in Uruguay in 1971 took place on Sunday, November 28, 1971.
In the elections, the electoral system of which was based on the relative majority in the so-called Lema system , the president as well as the 99 deputies and 30 senators were elected by proportional representation for a term of five years. 1,878,132 people were entitled to vote, 1,712,766 of whom exercised their right to vote. This corresponded to a voter turnout of 91.19%.
From the presidential and parliamentary elections that took place at the same time, the Partido Colorado (681,624 votes), to which three Sublema belonged, emerged victorious from the Partido Nacional (668,822 votes), which included two Sublema . For the first time, with the Frente Amplio (304,275 votes), another party broke into the monopoly of representation, which was essentially limited to the two large, traditional parties.
Juan María Bordaberry of the Partido Colorado was elected President. He took office on March 1, 1972. This resulted in the constellation owed to the peculiarities of the Uruguayan electoral system, that it was not Wilson Ferreira's candidacy with 26.4% of the votes, but rather the 22.8% share of the vote, which was held by Bordaberry, who won the presidency. Such a situation had already existed in 1946 and 1950, both at the expense of the Partido Nacional.
Distribution of seats in the House of Representatives
The distribution of seats for the House of Representatives was as follows:
- Partido Colorado: 41.4% (the two strongest sublema: Unión Nacional Reeleccionista (fraction Bordaberry / Pacheco): 28.3%; Unidad y Reforma (fraction Jorge Batlle, followed Lista 15 ): 12.1%)
- Partido Nacional: 40.4% (the two strongest sublema: Por la Patria / Movimiento Nacional Rocha (Ferreira faction): 30.3%; Herrera faction: 10.1%)
- Frente Amplio: 18.2%
The seats in parliament were thus divided as follows:

- Partido Colorado: 43.3%
- Partido Nacional: 40.0%
