Elections in October
On October 25, 2009, the presidential and parliamentary elections took place. The favorites were Luis Alberto Lacalle , a neoliberal politician who was president from 1990 to 1995, and José Mujica , who has been in parliament since 1995 and who was a member of the Tupamaros urban guerrilla, who had been imprisoned for 14 years. The choice was seen as a directional decision as to whether the conservatives or the reformers would come to power. Since neither Lacalle nor Mujica received an absolute majority in the election, a runoff between the two took place on November 29, 2009 . José Mujica received 52.85% of the vote and was elected as the next President of Uruguay.
