Elections in Uruguay in 1989

The presidential and parliamentary elections in Uruguay in 1989 took place on Sunday, November 26, 1989 .

The Partido Nacional emerged victorious from the government and parliamentary elections that took place at the same time . In the elections, the electoral system of which was based on the relative majority in the so-called Lema system , the president and vice-president as well as the 99 deputies and 30 senators were elected by proportional representation for a term of five years.

The mandates in the Chamber of Deputies were thus divided as follows:

  • Partido Nacional (39)
  • Partido Colorado (30)
  • Partido Frente Amplio (21)
  • Partido Por el Gobierno del Pueblo (9)

The Senate mandates in the Cámara de Senadores were thus divided as follows:

  • Partido Nacional (12)
  • Partido Colorado (9)
  • Partido Frente Amplio (7)
  • Partido Por el Gobierno del Pueblo (2)
