politics

Sapelli, a member of the Partido Colorado , held the office of Uruguayan Labor Minister from June 11, 1969 to March 1, 1972. Immediately thereafter, he was President of the Uruguayan Senate until June 27, 1973 . Sapelli, elected as such in 1971, was Vice President of Uruguay from 1972 to 1973. In February 1972, he supported President Juan María Bordaberry in his decision to end negotiations with the insurgent military. The military had made unacceptable demands. When the president decided in June 1973 to dissolve parliament under pressure from the military , Sapelli resigned because he did not agree with this decision. The president himself remained in his post until his fall in 1976, even if the military actually took power in 1973.
