Coup in Uruguay in 1973

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The coup of June 27, 1973 was a coup in Uruguay and marked the beginning of the civil- military dictatorship .

Since the late 1960s , there has been more and more authoritarianism in Uruguay , but within the framework of the constitution . President Juan María Bordaberry had been in office since March 1, 1972, and the Tupamaros guerrillas have since been overwhelmed by the military . This made the military very powerful so that the political system could not bring the soldiers back to the barracks . In February 1973 the Army and Air Force rose up against Defense Minister Antonio Francese , so that the political crisis began and only ended on June 27 with the dissolution of Parliament .
