The Fuerzas Armadas del Uruguay (FF.AA.) are the armed forces of the State of Uruguay . The three branches of the armed forces are constitutionally subordinate to the president through the defense minister .

The strength of the armed forces and the military budget have been reduced again and again over the past 30 years. At the beginning of 2014, the proportion of military personnel comprised 29,710 people, 1.8% of the workforce in Uruguay. Soldiers can in after 20 years of service with a third of their final salary pension go. The share increases with each additional year of service (max. 30 years of service).
