The armed forces of Venezuela ( Fuerza Armada Nacional Bolivariana , FANB) comprise around 351,000 soldiers in 2020 , who are divided into various branches of the armed forces . Their tasks are national defense , search and rescue , disaster control and the fight against drug-related crime . The commander-in-chief of the FANB is the respective Venezuelan president. The strategic operational commander of the FANB is the Defense Minister , currently Vladimir Padrino López . Due to the changeable political situation in the past few years, the structure, especially the number of personnel, of the military and also of paramilitary organizations changes frequently.

Around 343,000 active soldiers and 8,000 reservists serve in the FANB . It consists of the following armed forces :

In addition to the classic three armed forces, the following military organizations also exist:

  • National Guard ( Guardia Nacional Bolivariana )
    • approx. 70,000 members, according to the constitution, military corps with police function
  • National Militia ( Milicia Bolivariana )
    • Strength unknown, planned strength depending on the Commander in Chief 1,100,000-3,000,000 members
  • Honor Guard of the President
    • Representative duties and responsible for the safety of the president and his family, approx. 1,500–5,000 members
  • Military Intelligence ( Dirección General de Inteligencia Militar )
