The armed forces of Suriname ( Dutch Nationaal Leger ) make up the military of the Republic of Suriname with 2200 soldiers . They are divided into army , air force , navy , which also includes the coast guard , and the military police . In terms of military strength and available firepower, Suriname ranks 135th out of 138 nations in 2020, according to a report by Global Fire Power (GFP).

army

The army of around 1400 soldiers is divided into an infantry battalion ( 33rd Bataljon of Infantry ), which was set up in 1987, a special unit , a support battalion ( Staf verzorgings Bataljon ) and a military police unit .

air force

The 200-strong Air Force has a Cessna 172 , a Britten-Norman BN-2 Islander and three HAL Chetaks . There are also two Iskander and two CASA C-212 in reserve .

marine

The 220 soldiers strong navy, including Coast Guard has three patrol boats from Dutch holdings and several auxiliary boats.

military police

The most visible task of the military police for incoming people is the passport control at Johan Adolf Pengel International Airport .

  • Air force base in Zorg en Hoop
  • Ayoko-Kazerne training center for recruits and the detachment in Zanderij .
  • Akontoe-Velantie-Kazerne in Albina , the eastern border post.
  • Prof. Dr. Ali-Kazerne in Nickerie , the western border post.
  • Sergeant 1-Martowidjojo-Kazerne on the Kennedy Highway in Concordia.

Military academy

On September 20, 2019, the first military academy in Suriname, Paramaribo, was opened at Verlengde Keizerstraat 30. The 8 million SRD project was largely financed by donations.

In addition to the academy for officer training, the building also houses a military school for training NCOs.
