Zorg en Hoop airfield ( IATA code : ORG, ICAO code : SMZO) is a small airfield in Suriname . It is located in the capital Paramaribo in the district of the same name and the Flora district on Doekhieweg.
history
The Zorg en Hoop (Care and Hope) plantation , from which it owes its name, was originally located in this area .
The airfield was put into operation in 1953 when the later founders of the airline Surinam Airways , Ronald Kappel and Herman van Eyck, started their flight operations here.
From here, flights are mainly carried out to the smaller airfields in the villages and gold mines inland.
At the end of April 2010, the runway was extended from 650 meters to 750 meters at a cost of EUR 1.8 million and the structure was reinforced.
The Statistical Office in Suriname registered around 4,000 people arriving at the airfield in 2011.
In December 2014 a new arrival and departure hall was put into use.
