Yucca angustissima subsp. avia (English common name "Avia Yucca") is a subspecies of the plant species Yucca angustissima in the asparagus family (Asparagaceae).

description

Yucca angustissima subsp. avia grows solitary or forms small groups. The variable, yellow-green leaves are 40 to 60 cm long and 0.5 to 1.5 cm wide. It forms fibers on the leaf margins.

The inflorescence that begins in the leaves becomes 0.5 to 1.8 meters high. The pendulous, bell-shaped, spherical, white to cream-colored flowers have a length and a diameter of 3.5 to 4.5 cm. It is the northernmost representative of the Angustissima group of the Glaucae series . The subspecies Yucca angustissima subsp. avia is only found in high regions above 2400 m. It prefers stony, loamy soil and does not grow on sandy terrain like the other representatives. Transitional forms that are close to the species Yucca harrimaniae are located near the distribution area . The flowering time is in June.

Yucca angustissima subsp. avia is in Central Europe to minus 20 ° C frost-hardy . It is rarely found in collections. 10 year old specimens are in F. Hochstätter's collection unprotected in the open air.

distribution

Yucca angustissima subsp. avia is in the State of Utah in the Great Basin Desert in a limited area in altitudes from 2,400 to 2,700 meters endemic spread. It grows together with Pediocactus simpsonii , Echinocereus triglochidiatus and various Opuntia species.
