Yucca harrimaniae (English common name : Harriman Yucca) is a species of palm lily ( Yucca ) in the asparagus family (Asparagaceae).

description

Yucca harrimaniae grows solitary, stemless to group-forming (but sometimes with stems up to 30 cm in height). The stiff, green to green, blue-green to gray leaves are 10 to 50 cm long and 1.5 cm wide. The leaf margins are paper-like and later become fibers.

The inflorescence that begins in the leaves protrudes above the leaves and is 0.4 to 1 meter high. The pendulous, bell-shaped, spherical, white to cream-colored flowers are 4 to 6 cm long and 2 to 3 cm in diameter. The flowering period extends from April to July.

Yucca harrimaniae is frost hardy to minus 18 ° C in Central Europe . It is rare in collections.

Yucca harrimaniae is common in the "Great Basin Desert" in the states of Utah, Colorado, New Mexico and Nevada in plains and mesas on limestone hills at altitudes between 1000 and 2700 meters. This species often grows in association with Pediocactus bradyi subsp. despainii , Pediocactus bradyi subsp. winklerorum , Pediocactus simpsonii , Sclerocactus spinosior , Sclerocactus spinosior subsp. blainei , Sclerocactus parviflorus , Sclerocactus wrightiae , Escobaria missouriensis subsp. navajoensis , various Echinocereus , Escobaria , Micropuntia and Opuntia species.

Systematics

The botanical name honors Edward H. Harriman . The first description by William Trelease under the name Yucca harrimaniae was published in 1902.
