Sclerocactus spinosior subsp. blainei is an extremely endangered subspecies of the Sclerocactus spinosior plant in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The subspecies was named in honor of Blaine Welsh, wife of Stanley Larson Welsh . English common names are "Blaine's Cactus" and "Eagle Claw Cactus".

description

Sclerocactus spinosior subsp. blainei grows globally. It becomes 4 to 12 cm long and 3 to 8 cm in diameter. The purple, short, tubular flowers are 1 to 3.5 cm long and 1 to 2 cm wide. Pubescent thorns are typical. The subspecies Sclerocactus spinosior subsp. blainei is smaller than the subspecies Sclerocactus spinosior subsp. spinosior . The species is able to flower in its early youth stage. The flowering period is from April to May.

distribution

Sclerocactus spinosior subsp. blainei grows in the Great Basin Desert in Nevada in a limited area on flat hills in limestone soil at altitudes from 1350 to 1750. There it is associated with Micropuntia gracilicylindica , Echinocereus engelmanni and other cactus species as well as Yucca baccata and Yucca harrimaniae .

Systematics

The description as Sclerocactus spinosior subsp. blainei was made in 1995 by Fritz Hochstätter.

Synonyms are Sclerocactus blainei S.L.Welsh & KHThorne (1985, Basionym ), Sclerocactus schlesseri K.D. Heil & SLWelsh (1986) and Sclerocactus spinosior var. Schlesseri (KDHeil & SLWelsh) R.May (1988).
