Sclerocactus wrightiae is a species of the genus Sclerocactus in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet wrightiae honors the American botanist Dorothea Wright from Salt Lake City, Utah. An English common name is "Wright's Fishhook Cactus".

description

The pressed-spherical to oval-growing Sclerocactus wrightiae reaches heights and diameters of 4 cm to 6 cm. The funnel-shaped flowers have a length and a diameter of 2 to 2.5 cm. The bracts are usually yellow, rarely white to pink. The flowering period begins at the end of April.

Sclerocactus wrightiae is closely related to Sclerocactus glaucus and Sclerocactus parviflorus and is a representative of the Parviflori section .

Systematics, distribution and endangerment

Sclerocactus wrightiae in Utah in the desert of the Colorado Plateau endemic on gravelly, sandy, basic level ground or on low hills at elevations from 1,200 to 1,800 meters. It often grows there together with Sclerocactus parviflorus subsp. terrae-canyonae , Sclerocactus parviflorus subsp. parviflorus , Pediocactus bradyi subsp. winklerorum and various types of yucca .

The first description was in 1966 by the American botanist Lyman David Benson .

Sclerocactus wrightiae is endangered and was included in Appendix I of the Washington Convention for the Protection of Endangered Species. In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN is the species as " Near Threatened (NT) ", d. H. listed as low risk.
